Toxic air is invading the Alabama and Florida shores. Scientists that have been monitoring the air quality are now seeing contamination levels as much as 100 times higher than acceptable. Prepare and use an air purifier to cleanse the nursery of these toxins. Don't wait until you experience contamination illnesses like the oil slick worker cleanup crews.
Concentrate on Your Baby's Nursery
The baby's room is a sanctuary. A nursery is a place where your baby sleeps and should be safe from airborne contamination. Why? Because babies, like the elderly, are more vulnerable to airborne contamination much more so than the general population. They are the first to feel the negative health effects of bad air, toxic chemicals and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
Impact of Exposure Air Toxins in the Gulf
What happens to children exposed to these toxins? They experience "flu or cold like symptoms" from breathing and absorbing the fumes from the oil spill. Children will suffer from bad headaches, nausea, sore throats, burning eyes, persistent coughs, stuffy sinuses and dizziness. With high level exposure, children can experience unconsciousness and even death.
Measurements of Toxicity
The EPA has been monitoring a Louisiana coastal community's air quality and has found airborne levels of toxic chemicals like hydrogen sulfide and benzene far in exceed of the safety standards for human exposure. Hydrogen Sulfide has been detected at concentrations more than 100 times greater than the level known to cause physical reactions in people or, about 1000 parts per billion (ppb). VOC Benzene, which normally should be 3.76 ppb has been recently measured at levels of 483 ppb.
This toxicity has been confirmed by NASA. Using two different satellites, scientists studying the Gulf of Mexico with MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and CALIOP (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization) have interpreted red image graphics indicating aerosols (toxins) over the spill and many layers of VOCs above the water. The same scientists believe that the VOCs are in significant concentrations and are trying to answer the question, "how much and how deadly is the toxicity?"
Gulf Fisherman and Cleanup Crews
British Petroleum is neglectful by not supplying workers with respirators. Cleanup workers are getting sick and it is unclear if profits are more important than people. It has been reported that many workers have been hospitalized. One doctor suggested that a fisherman working in the Gulf was exhibiting health signs of a 3 pack-a-day smoker even if the fisherman doesn't smoke. BP claims that masks and respiratory equipment are not necessary. Ironic, given the illnesses that are being observed are classic symptoms of toxic airborne contamination. As the fumes approach shore, these contaminants are the very same contaminants that will invade your nursery.
Summary
Don't make the same mistake that BP has done. Your home will likely experience a significant increase in airborne contamination as the oil spill disaster fumes approach shore. We see that the contamination exists and we know crew workers have fallen ill. These same fumes will enter your nursery where your child sleeps. Just like the workers insisting that they get protection, you should prepare your nursery. Buy an air cleaner that can cleanse air of oil spill contamination. It should have a large quantity of activated carbon blend and a medical grade High Efficiency Particulate Arresting (HEPA) filter. This air purifier will work to eliminate the airborne toxins and bring your baby's nursery back to an air quality of purified air.
