A little over a month ago, reports suggested that several dozen oil cleanup crew members had fallen ill. Authorities suggested that the illnesses were caused by heat exhaustion and possibly fumes from the oil. In the past week or so, reports say over 160 oil spill crew members were suffering from flu-like systems. Gulf Oil Spill Illnesses Draws Parallels to Gulf War Illness
Reports say that Gulf oil spill cleanup crew members are beginning to get sick from the gases. These gases, emitted from the crude oil are called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These are toxic chemical that are documented to be hazardous to health.
Keep exposure to crude oil and the related VOCs to a minimum with proper air cleaning at the cleanup sites, in boats cabins, offices and homes. Air purifiers are capable of removing these dangerous gases.
